Meet Verbal Beginnings’ Rockville Center Director, Valencia Lanzot, whose journey in ABA began not in a clinic or classroom, but in the homes of Maryland families. What started as a part-time RBT position while finishing a Psychology degree blossomed into a decade-long career built on passion, growth, and an unshakeable love for the field. From managing technicians across four states to leading a thriving center, her path is a testament to what’s possible when talent meets the right environment. Read on to learn more about her story, her values, and yes; her coffee habit.

My first experience with ABA was my in-home RBT position! I had moved to Maryland from Rhode Island and needed a part-time job while continuing my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. I worked 1:1 in home settings, as well as in our Social Beginnings program. I fell in love with ABA then and have enjoyed my time in the field ever since.
How have your responsibilities evolved since you first started? What do you do now?
While continuing my Bachelor’s degree, my supervisor at the time recommended that I apply for the position of Field Coordinator. There, I managed a team of technicians across Maryland, Virginia, DC, and Pittsburgh, and grew to enjoy supporting new and experienced technicians growing within the company. After receiving my degree, I became an Operations Coordinator for our Annapolis and Rockville centers. My most recent and current position as the Center Director at Rockville has been so much fun!
What energizes you the most from what you do all day?
Every day is a new day. I love leading a team that is passionate about their work, and a center full of clients eager to have fun. We’re able to have fun as a group at the center, and that’s the best part!

I’ve been able to grow throughout my professional career at Verbal Beginnings, which is great because I’ve been able to focus my skills in a field I love while continuously challenging myself and creating new goals. The personal growth I’ve seen has been really inspiring and allows me to know that the professional I’m becoming is aligned with my values.
What do you think about teamwork these days?
Teamwork is the most important aspect of our job here. Working together is not only necessary, but so much fun when the professionals are passionate about their work. It’s been amazing to see the teamwork not only between center staff, but the families as well!
What aspect of VB kept you here? What keeps you coming back each day?
Everyone is so kind! All of my supervisors have embodied a passion for supporting professionals who want to excel in their field. I’ve been encouraged to grow, all of my supervisors have really valued my strengths and believed in my ability to take on a new role. Having a team that sees your value and is willing to support your growth is really wonderful.
And for fun… what’s one small thing that instantly boosts your mood during the workday— coffee, music, a quick walk, a favorite treat?
I am a proud coffeeholic, I love anything outdoorsy– hiking, swimming, frolicking in the fields. I also love to travel!
